Lizzy Ross’ Traces
(self-released)
by Andrew Ritchey

Singing for Lafcadio, Lizzy Ross belted indie twang with disregard for whomever her stagecoach ran over. Drums and electric guitar spurred her forward. But on Traces, her solo debut, Ross reins everything, creating a quiet ode to youth and love. Besides the occasional bass or percussion backdrop, it’s just her and her acoustic. Picked guitar patterns provide motifs for extended verses that largely forgo choruses, emphasizing stories and emotion rather than typical song structures.

She visits a boyfriend’s hometown in “Not Yet” and looks at an old photo. “I can see a beard that’s making threats of growing in,” she sings, “but not yet.” Whether discovering the beginnings of love or stealing a husband, as on “Wedding Cake,” Ross creates intimacy with details and near-whispers. She can be sultry or innocent, despondent or hopeful. Throughout, though, her voice jumps octaves and bursts into extended runs, barely containing some hidden joy of youth or the excitement of uncertainty. During “Needle and Thread,” Ross ventures to “stitch together threadbare hearts/ make a new love from old parts.” In Traces, love is wonderful and cruel and steadfast and elusive, and Ross wants all of those pieces.

Lots going on this week. ATTENTION RALEIGH-ITES! We’re playing at Deep South Bar on Thursday (tomorrow night). The show starts at 8 and we’ll go on at 10, after Durham duo Battle Not With Monsters and songstress Anna Rose Beck.  On Friday, we’ll be getting down on the back porch at Harry’s at Whitecross on 54, from 7 to 9.  The whole band will be there rocking our own faces of.  As we tend to do…

My recent interview on WKNC’s 88.1 is now up on their site. Check it out–I play a few live tracks and we talk about the making of Traces, the band, songwriting, inspiration, and whatnot!  We also have videos up at our new Vimeo site! it’s at http://vimeo.com/lizzyross.  A few videos from our recent show at the Eno River festival are up now, and more are on their way.

Lastly, big news for the band! We were just invited to join Homegrown Music Network, an NC-based network of roots and indy bands that supports artists with distribution and radio promotion, among other services.  Looking forward to having that help as we get out on the road!  Thanks for helping us get there!

Until next time,

love and thanks,

Lizzy

Had a wonderful weekend visiting with the family.  Came back just in time for a show in Aberdeen at the amazing Rooster’s Wife (Awesome place! Played on the front porch of the old postmaster’s house).  Back in town, we’re gearing up for our show this Friday at the Broad Street Cafe.  The show will start at 10 and we’ll go on at 11, after Durham-based Humble Tripe lays down some tunes.  We’ll also be playing on the radio at 5 pm on Friday on WKNC’s Local Beat. You can tune in online if you’re out of town (last time we played on the radio, we broke the record for online listeners! Let’s do it again…).  And look out for a review of “Traces” in this week’s edition of the Indy Weekly–it will be coming out tomorrow (hold your breath!).

Other than that, not too much doing.  We’re booking short tours in September, so shoot me a line if you think we should come your way.  If you’re persuasive, we just might….

love!

Now, for the big news – first album review came in today! Piping hot off the press. I opened the enveolope myself.  Just kidding.  There was no envelope – just a web link:  http://dailytarheel.com/dive/music-review-lizzy-ross

A few highlights from Anna Norris of the Daily Tarheel:

“In a voice that’s got enough vibrato, sass and twang for a country singer, Ross’s earnest vocals waver between seduction and Fiona Apple-style intensity. Her lyrics are both clever — “stitch together threadbare hearts, make a new love from old parts”— and fun… just about the perfect antidote to clear away the muggy humidity of a North Carolina summer day”

So come on out and get you an album!

The album release show is on June 26th at the Local 506 in Chapel Hill, NC.  Doors will open at 7, the show starts at 8:30, and tickets are $5 ahead of time at www.local506.com.  They’ll be $7 at the door.  Puritan Rodeo and Big Al Hall will be opening up the show.  Come join us!  We’re hoping to make it our biggest show of the year…

CDs are on sale now at http://lizzy.net/category/buy-the-cd/.  I’ll be signing all the pre-ordered copies, so get ‘em while there’s still time!

Hi there!

Big news – I have a CD! It’s being printed as I write.  Go to http://lizzy.net/category/buy-the-cd/ to order a copy – all pre-ordered copies will be signed and sent to your door! (can I exclaim any more !?!)  I’m playing this Saturday, June 12th at 6:30 p.m. at Georgina’s in Cary, NC – it’ll be my last show in that neck of the woods for a while, as the Six String Cafe shut down and our June 11th show was thus cancelled (poo).

That said, I’d like to know if you have any suggestions for venues, events, and festivals that I could play. I’m always looking for a place to play, and your suggestions really help.  Just reply to this email or write me at info@lizzy.net.  I’ll play at weddings, festivals, clubs, bars, pig pickin’s, funerals, christenings, company picnics, holiday parties, swim meets, family reunions, country store jam sessions, frat parties, anniversaries… you get the point :) .  The same goes for singing and songwriting contests.  Thanks for the help! It means more than you know.

Also, I’m going to start filming a new cover song every month and placing them on Youtube for your viewing/listening pleasure! So, I need you to help me decide what songs to play. I’m excited to get to learn new material and hear your suggestions! Again, just write me at info@lizzy.net – tell me the artist and the song name, and I’ll have a listen.

A few links and reviews –

To all who wrote us up, thanks for the kind words!

That’s about it for now – I’m headed to my second out-of-state music festival next weekend (Elderberry Festival in MO), and on June 26th we have our CD release at the Local 506 in Chapel Hill. I’m so excited!  Thanks again for all your help, and thanks for listening.  I feel really lucky to be doing this.

Love and many thanks,

Lizzy

Pre-order the CD! It’s official!

Hey folks!
How you doing? Me, I’m sitting here watching a Paul Newman biography video out of the corner of my eye.  What a guy. Makes me wanna go eat some hard boiled eggs. Did you know that he raced cars? ( I didn’t know that.)  At the moment, I’m in awe of the sentence “Paul now [...]

How you doing? Me, I’m sitting here watching a Paul Newman biography video out of the corner of my eye.  What a guy. Makes me wanna go eat some hard boiled eggs. Did you know that he raced cars? ( I didn’t know that.)  At the moment, I’m in awe of the sentence “Paul now planned his film shoots around his racing schedule.”

It’s a brief moment of chillin’ in a few crazy weeks.  I’m in the home stretch of album work, and I’m ready to be DONE! I can’t wait to hold it in my hands.  Go to http://lizzy.net/category/buy-the-cd/ to pre-order the CD.  I’ll sign all the pre-ordered copies (weird!), so get ‘em while they’re hot!  You’ve got about two weeks until they’re out  :P

We’ve got a bunch of shows coming up this week- we’ll be playing our hometown of Carrboro, NC on Thursday, May 27th at the Station.  It’s a free show with the whole band and it starts at 10 p.m. We’re looking forward to a fun night with friends and a good bit o’ dancing.  On Friday, May 28th, Dylan and I will be playing an acoustic show at 7 p.m. on Front Street in Burlington, NC.  We’ll bring out some folkier tunes and a chilled-out vibe.  Then we’re bringing the whole band back for Saturday, May 29th at 2 p.m. in Martinsville, VA at the Rooster Walk Festival.  I’m so excited about this show! Check out the festival at http://www.roosterwalk.com/.  I think we’ll hang out for Saturday night, so feel welcome to come up and camp out.

That’s about it for now! I’m chugging along, writing songs and doing my thing.  I hope all is well, and I hope to see you sometime this weekend!

Love and thanks for reading,

Lizzy

Dear Companion–Show with Daniel Martin Moore and Ben Sollee

Hello loves,

What a wonderful weekend.  We drove up to Asheville to play with Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore.  Asheville was cold and gray, but the Orange Peel! Warm and wonderful.  Beautiful venue, kind people, and a great audience.  We’re looking forward to doing it again tomorrow night at the Carrboro Arts Center.  Doors are at 7, and we’ll be going on at 8.

Thank you so much to all the folks who came out on Saturday, especially those who came all the way from Chapel Hill.  When you’re standing on stage alone, it all seems kind of big and scary.  It’s good to have friends, people who come because they want to hear you, in the audience.

That said, playing out of town (i.e. not in the NC triangle :) ) was an awesome experience in that we didn’t know the whole audience!  And people still liked it!  Holy moly, that means there must be something good going on.

(what does “holy moly” mean, anyway?)

An update on the album front: we’ve booked time with John Plymale, an awesome engineer, and we’ll be working with him at Overdub Lane studios in Durham.  I’m so excited (SO EXCITED) to be putting this together.  The plan is to release a solo acoustic album (front porch music), and a band album (rock and roll).  Everybody’s happy :)

Love.

Hey yall!

Things are going well.  At our show in Pittsboro last Saturday we had a fantastic crowd.  The manager said it was the biggest he had seen since he worked there, so thank you for coming out! I know I had touted it as a dancing spot, but it turned out that enough people came out to make it too hard to dance.  Well done :)

I’m sitting here in my room/office/abode taking care of the day’s business.  It’s been an exciting day—steel cut oats for breakfast, for one.  Even more so, I got on the phone with a few studios and set up times to go feel them out. We’re going to be recording soon, doing both solo acoustic work and work with the band, and I am freakin’ excited.

Get ready.

Love,

Lizzy
